Behind the Lens: Being let go in 2024
Getting let go in 2024 turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. Some call it taking a leap of faith going freelance full time, but I feel like I was pushed off a ledge and prayed there was something to land on. As I reflect on this incredible journey that was my 2024, I wanted to share my hardest lessons I’ve learned during my first year freelancing.
1️⃣ Your Network is Everything. Relationships matter more than ever. Former colleagues, industry connections, and even friends can open doors you never expected. Don’t hesitate to share your journey—they might be the ones cheering you on or introducing you to your next big client.
2️⃣ Rejection can be Redirection. Not every client will say yes, and not every opportunity will work out—and that’s okay. I’ve learned that while rejection is difficult to experience (and you get ALOT of it when you start) often it clears the way for something better. It’s all about trusting the process and staying focused on your goals.
3️⃣ How You Survive the Lows, Defines Your Highs. Freelancing has its peaks and valleys. The slow seasons taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of investing in personal growth. Those tough times made the wins that followed even sweeter.
4️⃣ Celebrate Every Win. Freelancing can be a rollercoaster, but every shoot booked, client referral, or even a kind comment on a photo is worth celebrating. Taking a moment to acknowledge these victories, no matter how small, helped me stay focused and motivated through some of the most challenging moments.
This year has been a whirlwind of growth, learning, and creative fulfillment. I’m beyond grateful to work with incredible boutique hotels, tourism brands, and other businesses bringing their stories to life.
To my fellow freelancers, aspiring photographers, and creative entrepreneurs: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned recently? Let’s connect and inspire each other! 💬
